Emergency contraception, commonly called the morning after pill, is used after sexual intercourse but before a woman becomes pregnant. It works by either suppressing ovulation or preventing a fertilized egg from implanting into the lining of the uterus, thereby preventing pregnancy. Blue Mountain Clinic offers this form of contraception through Plan B emergency contraception pills which are similar to birth control pills, but contain no estrogen.
Emergency contraception pills must be taken within 72 hours of unprotected intercourse and are most effective when taken within 12-24 hours. When taken during this time period and according to the instructions, chances of preventing pregnancy are about 79 to 84 percent. Recent studies indicate that even when taken 4-5 days after unprotected intercourse the effectiveness is reported at 60 - 63 percent.
Although medical professionals have known about emergency contraception for almost 30 years, the FDA only approved it in 1999. In 2006, the FDA approved over the counter pharmacy sales to women and men 18 years and older. (It still remains a prescription medication for anyone under 18 years of age.) This means if you are 18 years old or older you may purchase emergency contraception over the counter at your local pharmacy. It is also available at Blue Mountain Clinic.
